It's officially spring time at our zone 5, upstate NY homestead! Before I get too excited... that still means snow on the ground. In fact, it's snowing outside, right now.
Cold. Wet. Heavy. Slushy. Snow.
Did I mention cold?
Not really the spring time image of green, birds singing, and warm weather.
What does that mean for us?
For starters, daylight savings time recently occurred. Loosing an hour of light in the morning tends to make morning time chores a little rough... but we are forever thankful for the extra hour of light in the evening! Day time temperatures are steadily rising above freezing, the snow is starting to melt, and the floors in my house are perpetually covered in muddy paw prints.
Night time temperatures are still dipping into the teens and the garden beds are covered in a layer of snow and ice.
After a long, seemingly unending winter, spring really does rush in! It's a refreshing breath of air, teeming with life, renewing hope, and ushering in new dreams.
With increased daylight and real spring weather on the horizon, that means we start seeing an uptick in our hens egg production. Seemingly overnight we go from getting one or two eggs a day upwards of 19 or 20!
Garden plans start to become garden realities, seeds are started, cold weather crops will soon be planted out under row cover or in the greenhouse. Birds return from their southern living-quarters, greeting us each morning with their chorus of songs.
After a long, seemingly unending winter, spring really does rush in! It's a refreshing breath of air, teeming with life, renewing hope, and ushering in new dreams.
Chores start to become more plentiful, but they also start getting a little easier (no more hauling buckets of water through drifts of snow)... and did I mention baby goats?
After our long winter, we were blessed with triplets from our Nubian doe. For a first time mother it was an impressive feat! I can't think of many things in life that are as cute or as fun as kids. Long eared, bouncy, cuddly, goat kids.
So thank you to spring! Thank you for always arriving, even when we feel it won't be here soon enough. Thank you for new life, for new blessings, for renewed hope, and new dreams.
Until Next Time.....
Ashley
Can’t wait for Spring and Summer, bring it on!
